Argument In Favor Of Legalizing Pot Builds

Posted at 07:42 PM on July 04, 2009 Comments comments (0)

A recent article in this space was titled “The price of legalizing pot is too high.” Ignoring our past national experience with alcohol prohibition, the author opined as to how an “open market” causes greater harm.  We obviously need our government ( not the one we formed in Sacramento as an independent California Republic ) to mandate what’s good for us.

Another article offered the oft-heard sophism that pot alon...

Santa Cruz, CA — A state appeals court in Sacramento this week ruled that medical marijuana patients can sue over raids by local law enforcement, but county authorities aren’t too worried as local rules spell out when and where such raids are allowed.

“It’s the sheriff’s department’s policy to protect medical marijuana patients,” said Sgt. Mark Yanez with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office. However, he said, when patients ...

Medical Marijuana Backers Wary As ID Cards Readied

Posted at 03:14 PM on July 03, 2009 Comments comments (0)

Even as San Bernardino County prepares to comply with state law and issue identification cards to medical marijuana patients in August, advocates say access to cannabis may remain difficult.

The same day the Board of Supervisors approved the ID card program, the board also voted to enact a moratorium on the opening of dispensaries — to allow time for county planners to draft land-use and permitting rules for the facilities.

This Is Your War on Drugs

USA — Among our leaders in Washington, who’s been the biggest liar? There are all too many contenders, yet one is so floridly surreal that he deserves special attention. Nope, it’s not Dick Cheney or Alberto Gonzales or John Yoo. It’s a trusted authority figure who’s lied for 11 years now, no matter which party held sway. (Nope, it’s not Alan Greenspan.) This liar didn’t end-run Congress, or bully it, or have its surreptitious blessing at the time onl...

Senate Commission To Study MJ Decriminalization

Providence, R.I. — Weeks after legalizing the sale of marijuana to sick people, law makers have voted to explore how much Rhode Island might collect in revenue if it were to make all sales of marijuana legal and impose a “sin tax” of $35 perounce. During the General Assembly’saborted rush to adjournment Friday, the Senate approved a resolution —introduced earlier the same day — to create a nine-member special commission to study a swath of issu...

The Marijuana Debate- Alabama

Posted at 03:21 PM on June 30, 2009 Comments comments (0)

Although some states are openly debating the legalization of marijuana, Alabama does not appear ready to take that step just yet. Still, there are some advocates for legalization, such as former gubernatorial candidate Loretta Nall. In a sluggish economy, as states are struggling to keep the books balanced, several have been asked to discuss the legalization and regulation of marijuana, both as a cost saver and as a source of tax reven...

House Subcommittee OKs Marijuana on D.C. Ballot

Posted at 12:04 AM on June 30, 2009 Comments comments (0)

Washington, D.C. House appropriations subcommittee has lifted a long-standing budget rider banning the District government from spending any money to decriminalize marijuana.

The Financial Services panel, which has oversight of D.C., has removed from the 2010 budget 11-year-old language outlawing the Districts use of federal or local funds to legalize marijuana or reduce penalties for its possession or distribution.

This is definitely something we've been working with Congress on ...

L.A. City Council removes loophole from marijuana dispensary law

Posted at 03:35 PM on June 29, 2009 Comments comments (0)

The Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to remove a legal loophole that led to the uncontrolled proliferation of medical marijuana dispensaries, and to extend the temporary ban on new dispensaries by another six months.

Council members unanimously directed the city attorney to eliminate the hardship exemption in a 2007 ordinance which allowed nearly 500 dispensaries to open across the city. The council is expected to vote on the revised ordinance next week.

Hearings are under w...
